♫ On the Eleventh Day of Giving,
The kids helped me,
Volunteer at a thrift store,
To support those in hospice, sensibly. ♫
Thrift stores are a great way for organizations to earn money for their cause. Not only does the organization benefit from the donations and resale of those items, but those who shop there benefit from their purchases by re-purposing items and spending their money for a good cause.
One of the thrift stores we volunteered for this past week donated all their profits to hospice, using an all volunteer staff. In any given week, they employ 100+ volunteers to come in and help them sort through the mountains of donated items. They work to price tag those items and get them out on the floor to sell.
The kids were excited to help when they got there and even more so when they found out they’d be able to use price guns! The supervisor in charge let us go to the back room and sit at a large conference table with stacks of movies and cds lining the walls.
The kids learned how to work the pricing guns and went to town labeling the items. My son made it a race, built in with a little cd-stacking-Jenga practice!
Thrift stores are usually happy to have the help and helping out teaches kids the value of service.
